Scammers have devised a sophisticated way to steal cryptocurrencies from Ledger hardware wallets

“If this image sounds familiar to you, immediately withdraw money from your Ledger wallet”, – with these words begins a post on Reddit, the author of which talked about a rather sophisticated and at the same time simple scheme of stealing funds from hardware wallets designed to securely store cryptocurrencies.

Several people have already become victims of scammers. They all ordered Legder Nano S hardware wallets on eBay. One of them notes that the device he received was slightly different from what he saw in YouTube reviews..

Unlike the original wallets, the Nano S, obtained from a malicious seller on eBay, does not prompt the user to create a new account or restore an old one on first launch. Nor does he suggest setting a PIN; in the cases described, the PIN was indicated in the accompanying document, which does not come with the original Nano S.

The same document contains a 24-word seed phrase hidden under a protective layer. Ledger Nano S, which has no traces of intruders, generates it along with a PIN on first launch.

One of the Reddit users writes that these differences seemed suspicious to him, therefore, before starting to use the wallet, he returned it to the manufacturer’s settings, which allowed him to save his cryptocurrency assets. Another owner of the same wallet turned out to be less fortunate and transferred XRP, Litecoin and Dash to it for an amount exceeding £ 25,000. It is easy to guess that when he decided to check the value of his savings, the money was already at an unknown address.

Perhaps ordering a cryptocurrency storage device from a third party is not a good idea. If you have already become the owner of a wallet with traces of an intruder’s interference, return it to the manufacturer’s settings, set the PIN-code and seed-phrase yourself and only then transfer your digital assets to it.
